favorite things friday

What? it's friday? Yes! That means date night with my hubby :)

Here are a few other things that are making my life a little sweeter this week :)

1. pumpkin pie - i made my first of the "holiday season" using paula dean's recipe. so good (and only half a stick of butter! that has to be a record for her). i also made miniature ones using a cupcake pan and pie dough cut into the size of our espresso saucers. they're so cute!
2. pea green - i keep buying things this color and it looks absolutely awful on me. seriously just drains the color right out of my face. ari taught me to knit last week and the scarf i'm making is this color. if you get it for christmas - just know it looked awful on me and i wanted someone to enjoy it haha
3. my new necklace from lilyleighs on etsy - i've worn it every day. it has a cute little bird and two styles of leaves. i love it.
4. oregon chai latte - sign up for a free sample here. warms me up on these cold days! which brings me to my next favorite
5. snow!!!! - it has snowed almost every day this week and i've loved it! apart from me not being able to go run, it makes me really happy...and listen to christmas music. (oops)
6. martha stewart living - this was waiting for me in my room in texas. the last of my subscription... so i've been enjoying every last bit of it this week. getting my money's worth, ya know? :)
7. A is for Apron - my mom bought this for me because I am making some aprons for her for christmas gifts. it is SUCH a great book with patterns and inspiration for each apron. i can't stop looking at it.
8. crunch n' munch - guilty pleasure. and by guilty...i mean guilty. it has so many calories and so much sugar..i mean, come on. it says "buttery toffee" underneath the title. great. this teamed up with my lack of running this week is sure to be a great combination.

have a great weekend!!!

Zeal & Passion

I had the blessing of going home to Texas for the weekend and spend some awesome time with family. I left refreshed, a little sore from a 5K, and oh, so thankful. God is good, that's for sure.

The trip back was rough. It rained the whole drive in Texas, we hit a snow storm for the entire drive through New Mexico (these Texas girls don't know how to handle that, yet) and Michelle got pulled over (praise the Lord for no ticket! she winked her way out haha). Once we got to Colorado it cleared up for a bit so we pulled out a sermon to listen to (we still probably hit snow storms about every 45 mintues.yuck). I don't remember the speaker's name but she spoke about zeal & passion and it really jolted me.

Romans 12:11 says, "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord."

It says never (NEVER!) be lacking in zeal... I've been struggling a lot with my inconsistent schedule of nannying, custom orders, working on my etsy shop(s), cooking, and keeping the house decent. I feel like I'm not making a difference anywhere and I'm just flat out bored. It's really hard to think that the Lord has me in this place for a reason. But the Word reminds us to keep our fervor, keep our zeal, keep our passion in all we do, serving the Lord throughout it all. Everything we do needs to be done with passion..with all the intensity that that word entails.

I need to be doing everything, whether its doing the dishes or serving on the praise team at church, with the most passion I have, in order to give God the glory He deserves. I should be excited at the opportunity to show Gunnison, Colorado the joy I have in Christ by my actions and ambitions. I could only hope that it would be a chain reaction and I could stir others into action by my attitude.

But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. Exodus 9:16

Proclaim Him today. Shamelessly & Passionately.

What to Eat Wednesday & New Etsy Shop

Hi all :)

First I want to start off with a link to my new etsy shop. My goal with this shop is to keep everything under $20. Right now I have some fun headbands and my owls in stock. I'll keep you posted when I put new gifts/items in there.

This weekend I made some Chai Latte Cupcakes and they turned out SO YUMMY! I've had quite a few people ask me for the recipe so you got it!

Chai Latte Cupcakes (thank you, Betty Crocker)

-one betty crocker french vanilla cake mix
-3 tablespoons instant chai latte mix
-3 eggs
-1 1/2 cups of water (for high altitude take out a quarter cup to make it 1 1/4 cups)
-1/3 cup veggie oil

1 cup white chocolate baking chips
1 container of french vanilla icing

Heat oven to 350°F for shiny metal pans (or 325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Place paper baking cup in each of 24 regular-size muffin cups.

In large bowl, beat cake ingredients with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Divide batter evenly among muffin cups.

Bake 18 to 23 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pan to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

In medium microwavable bowl, microwave baking chips on High 30 seconds; stir until melted. If necessary, microwave 15 seconds longer. Stir until smooth; cool 5 minutes. Stir in frosting until well blended.

Immediately spread or pipe frosting mixture on cupcakes.

**I sprinkled the tops with cinnamon and added pieces of cinnamon sticks on the top. I'm telling you, they were darling until I commuted with them on my bike basket.**

p.s. i'm going to texas tomorrow! whoop :)

Quick Read. Great Article. Phenomenal Music Artist.

When people post things on their blogs (youtube videos, links to articles, etc) I never read/watch them. Really. Never. Soooo it's a big deal that I am even linking this because of the low probability that I would have read it if I were you. BUT, i think you should.

I googled (i'm trying to tell myself that i'm over swagbucks) Jon Foreman, the lead singer of switchfoot, to see if he had any new music out and this article came up that he had just written.

It's a quick read (really, like 2 to 3 minutes, max...didn't you already waste that on facebook today times 5?) and well worth your time. It will get you thinking and brainstorming...

"Let your life be a beautiful song. We need hope. Tell a good story with the way you live." just a little teaser to get you to read it. good stuff, i tell you.

that's all for now. I'm going to make more owls :)

happy monday

So before I get started, check out this little guy. As soon as there is an appropriate occasion for a pastel owl cake - you better believe I'll make it. I can't resist. (look at the cute little fondant feet!)

I don't have much to say today, but wanted to show some pictures from the studio tour this weekend like I promised. We had a great turnout (and my chai latte cupcakes were a success) and people seemed to really enjoy our work. I sold four owls (I wasn't going into it trying to sell them, but there was no reason to say no...) and everyone kept asking me why I wasn't selling my vintage stuff anywhere in town. So overall, I feel like it was a success. We got word out on my dresses & owls and Chase's photography got more publicity. He has the entire upstairs in the Gunnison Arts Center (where I just applied for a pray for that) to display his stuff for the month of November. We're really excited about that.

**click photos to see them bigger**

Read Psalm 37 if you get a chance today. Good for the soul. Literally ; )

What To Eat Wednesday: Chicken with Sweet Potatoes & Onions

So usually recipes in magazines such as Real Simple and Martha Stewart Living are ridiculous. Can I get an amen? I mean, they include a bajillion ingredients, most of which are definitely NOT in my cupboard. However, my friend Ari (she is such a blessing, let me tell you) gave me her last Real Simple after reading it and I decided to actually try a recipe. It had minimal ingredients and stuff I would either have or could pick up really quickly.

So here goes!

Chicken with Sweet Potatoes & Onions
recipe & photo courtesy of
  • 2 small sweet potatoes (about 1 pound), peeled and cut into thin wedges (I accidentally bought yams instead. oops)
  • 1 red onion, cut into wedges
  • 12 sprigs fresh thyme (bought organic so I could feel like a hippie)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • salt and black pepper
  • 1 3 1/2- to 4-pound chicken, cut into 10 pieces (orrrrr 6-8 drumsticks - they are super inexpensive and a lot less work!!)

-Heat oven to 400ยบ F. In a large roasting pan, toss the potatoes, onion, thyme, oil, 1⁄2 teaspoon salt, and 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper.

-Season the chicken with 1⁄2 teaspoon salt and 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper and nestle it, skin-side up, among the potatoes and onions. (i ended up flipping mine half way through cooking time)

-Roast until the chicken is cooked through and the potatoes are tender, 40 to 50 minutes. (if you are in high altitude like us, it takes more like an hour to an hour and fifteen)

easy enough? go for it! Don't know what's for dinner? Go pick up 4 things from the grocery store and get to it!

Chase loved it and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it (despite the fact that I used yams and not sweet potatoes...they're NOT the same thing. I don't care what you say!)

Sidenote: Ari and I went to Sam's this past weekend and I got a TON (6.5 pounds for $7.50!!) of drumsticks so I could make different variations of this meal. So good!

Have a blessed day, friends :)

First Blog. Yikes. So much pressure...

So I've entered the blog world. what?

I wanted to go into this with no purpose for the blog...but that seems pointless. Everything needs to have a purpose so here it is: I just want this blog to be a fun way for y'all to stay up to date with the nomads we have become. I want to share life and recipes and crafts and projects that I'm up to and I want you to be encouraged.

"Then sings my soul" is a part of one of my favorite hymns, H
ow Great Thou Art. I want love and mercy and hope and grace to be an overflow of my heart & soul. I want my soul to sing when I can't seem to.
"Yellow Song Bird"...don't try to find too much meaning in that. I love to sing and I love birds and blue was already taken. sidenote: Lauren Chandler (Matt Chandler's wife) is quoted on my facebook page saying,

"I love birds. I love that they bring glory to God just by being birds. I want to be more like that...bringing glory to God just by being who He has created me to be."

I don't remember if I got that from another blog, if someone sent it to me or what...but I love it. It is a great reminder that our sovereign Lord has created me with a purpose and if I'm not living out who He has made me to be or bringing him glory....well friends, I'm not doing my job as a Christian.
Disclaimer: I can't promise that this blog will be full of wisdom and wit...or even capital letters.

I'll leave you with a verse that encouraged me this morning and a picture of myself and my handsome husband :)

The LORD your God is with you,
he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing." Zephaniah 3:17

Our King is for you! Whoop :)
