handmade monday: joy neville photography

I thought it'd be a fun change up to feature a photographer this week on Handmade Monday. Photographs are handmade and from taking product photos alone, I know that it is The framing, the staging, the editing. YIKES!

Over the holidays, Chase's gorgeous sister got married.

See? Gorgeous.

During the reception, Chase and I briefly chatted it up with the photographer, Joy Neville. You know when you are talking with someone and they just exude energy, excitement, passion about what they do, and humility at the same time? Yeah...that. That describes Joy. She is incredibly talented and yet still gets nervous about "getting the right shots."

Let's get to know Joy a little bit better :)

What inspires you most?
What inspires me most.....Hmmm. Wow- so many things inspire me.  Besides my two beautiful babies and husband I'd have to say, as cheesy as it may sound, the Song that God has put in my heart.  Well not just one particular song, but music in general.  I was a music major in college studying music therapy and singing has always been my number one passion and drive until I found photography, or it found me. Music is such perfect therapy for any mood or behavior type.  There is always some type of music playing or being played in our home.  So when I shoot- I'm either humming or singing some type of song.  It's just apart of me... if that makes sense?

What is your favorite color/color scheme?
My favorite color/color scheme..... i LOVE soft, vintage, light pastels- wait are we talking photography or in general?  Ha!  I'm always thinking photos.  I don't have one favorite color-I do love a great black and white but soft pastels are my favorite color scheme.

What is the most gratifying part of running your photography business?
Most gratifying part of having my own business....I would have to say the fact that I get to make people smile.  Meeting new people and allowing them to feel comfortable enough around me to be themselves and trust me enough to capture some of the most cherished and important times in their lives.  THAT is gratifying!  I am more honored to be able to do what I LOVE to do.

"I am more honored to be able to do what I LOVE to do"
That is so key and it makes my heart pitter patter to hear others say what I feel about doing handmade full-time.

I hope you found Joy as inspirational as I did. Her photos are absolutely stunning, right?!
Maybe one day I can talk Chase into doing a lifestyle shoot with her :)

In the meantime, go check out her work here.

Happy Handmade Monday, friends!

((saturday snapshot))

I wanted to try something new this week & maybe it will catch on..who knows. Every Saturday I will try & post a photo. It could be current, old from the archives of my college facebook, or something from the past week.

This is from college, while Chase and I were dating, and it never fails to

It was taken at the annual AMC Roller Derby Date Party...where you dress up ridiculous and skate (this particular skate..hence the outfit)

happy Saturday, friends!

pinwheel tutorial

hello, friends!

So, I'm planning on bringing back Favorite Things Friday next week. YAY! I  was going to this week, bu figured bringing back Handmade Monday AND having a post every other day this week will be enough. ;)

Not to mention...I have a FUN tutorial to share with y'all today!

After seeing this camera strap by Shey*B,

I wanted to make a paper version of these for photo props, putting in vases, hanging them on the wall in my studio, etc. I went on the hunt for paper at Michael's and for a good tutorial. I couldn't find one that suited my fancy...and my first try I made GIANT ones! This tutorial is for smaller ones that are much more useable :)

Note: These are not functioning pinwheels ((although I'm sure you could rig them to be)). Sorry.... we're just about eye candy today haha

Let's get started!

Here's what you need:

scrapbook paper ((it's more exciting if there's a print on both sides))
push pin
hole punch
wooden dowels OR bbq skewers :)
floral wire

One sheet of scrapbook paper will make 4 pinwheels. I'm just going to show you how to make one and you can repeat with all the other squares :)

Fold your paper lengthwise, and then again, to make 4 squares.

Cut along those lines.

Cut from each corner, almost to the middle.

Punch holes in one corner of each triangle. Sorry this is super out of focus, but I wanted to give you a guide for where to punch the holes.

Use your pushpin to punch a hole in the middle.

Fold your floral wire in half and thread a button onto it.

Start (loosely) folding the holes over the middle hole & hold them in place.

Once you have all four folded in, poke the two ends of the floral wire into the hold and pull through.

Put your dowel or skewer through the two pieces of floral wire. Twist close to the dowel and then wrap the remaining wire around the dowel.

Repeat with other squares & paper in any color your heart desires!

Put in a milk bottle or mason jar, use in a photoshoot, hang in a nursery, or stick them in the ground.
Just be prepared to become addicted to making them.

If you're short on time and would rather buy them, you can snag some from this etsy shop!

psalm 23

Excuse me, while I use this blog to sort through some stuff/digest/be open & honest. k, thanks.  :)

I've been in a valley lately, which is interesting because I'm also in such a thankful "season" of life and's a dry and low valley. God is overflowing my cup. He is allowing me to not only stay at home & pursue my passions, but is blessing the JUNK out of my business ventures.

((He continues to pursue me & bless me, even when I'm disobedient and selfish with my time))

For some reason, however, I am not wanting to dig in the Word and spend an extended amount of time in prayer. Sure,  I'll read my Bible to check it off. I'll read my book that tells me how to to be a good wife. I'll pray when I'm sewing and driving and running.

(( He reminds me it is not about religion, but a relationship ))

I've been more concerned with checking my sales in the morning than digging into His word. How messed up is this? I mean, all good things come from why wouldn't I FIRST jump at the chance to meet with Him in the morning & soak up His presence, rather than it being an afterthought once I get my orders done & shipped for the day.

(( I'm so undeserving of  the grace of my Father. ))

However, I know that in my heart, in this valley, my meaningless religion will not suffice. It will not snap me out of this funk (ps this is not a "depressed" funk. just a "spiritual" funk, where I can't seem to get in the groove and don't feel God speaking to me.) I'm realizing I don't feel/hear Him speaking because I'm not listening. I pack my days with to-do lists, errands, cutting, sewing, packaging. I LOVE these things and these things are GOOD. But I'm distracting myself with them and I am not LETTING Him speak to me.

(( His patience overwhelms me. ))

When I'm stressed out and just consumed with busy-ness, He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. ((psalm 23:2-3))

I'm so thankful for how He gently brings me back to Himself. He's so, so good & gracious.

What is the Lord showing you lately?

((another good listen that's definitely related to this post: the valley song by jars of clay))

((my first!)) WIWW post

w-w-wwwhat? WIWW? I'm not stuttering.

This is my first  What I Wore Wednesday post, friends!

I've stalked admired from afar as Lisa Leonard, Lindsey (The Pleated Poppy), and many other of my favorite bloggers displayed for the world to see what they wore the previous week. I honestly never thought I would ever do this fact, I probably made fun of it to Ari once or twice.

BUT, now that I'm working at home full-time ((YAY!)), I've realized how frumpy I can feel when I stay in my REI Cabin Fever Pants all day...and who wants to feel frumpy? Not to mention, this past week, as I've showered ((or not showered)) and have gotten dressed immediately upon waking up...I've been tremendously more productive. No lie.

So today, I am linking up with Lindsay and showing you what I wore! You outfit post haters can roll your eyes all you want. ;) Here are 6 days worth of outfits..
