An Oh, Sweet Joy! Year in Review

In January, my baby Knox bump was growing and I tried to channel my inner Tami Taylor.  I was beginning the nesting phase and nursery planning a bit.

In February, I launched the Colette headband, taught my first Influence e-class and shared a couple of my favorite DIY projects ((marquee light &  floral pocket tee))

In March, I celebrated my 26th birthday, had a maternity photoshoot, and struggled with being good enough.

In April, we welcomed our adorable baby boy into the world. The rest is a blur, but I got a lesson from the homeless and encouraged bloggers/small business owners to make the most of their advertising dollars.

In May, I had many sleepless nights and pretty much spent my days melting into a pile of goo. We also took a quick trip to my favorite place.

In June, I co-hosted a poshparty and forgot to recap it. Wooopsies. We also took Knox to Texas and it was awesome.

In July, I went to a jammin' party with some blogger friends, I begged fellow bloggers to change their focuses, and was interviewed for American Blogger. That was crazy.

In August, I did important things like ombre my hair and wore a pretty dress. I also added soft headbands to my shop after endless requests from my customers.

In September,  we went to Fayetteville, I shared my favorite beverage and taught a workshop and met amazing ladies at the Influence conference ((and can I admit I'm still processing and haven't posted about it?)). I also dealt with some piles in my heart and felt some heavy attack from the enemy ((hello Boulder flood. I didn't forget about your chaos)).

In October, I found lots of copycat shops, went to the pumpkin patch with my little family of three, and wore this shirt way too many times.

In November, I hosted the Handmade Holidays Gift Guide, launched my Holiday collection AND the new wire headbands.

This month has been crazy busy with the madewell event, finishing up the holiday rush of orders, counting my blessings and soaking up time with Knox and Chase.

This year has also entailed hiring two assistants, a record number of sales for us, and big dreams for 2014.  I've worked an occasional merchandising job on Pearl street, have had to find our new normal over and over, and have been digging into discipleship. I have nursed Knox in the most obscure places and did a 21 day crazy pants diet ((no sugar, gluten, dairy, soy, artificial sweeteners, or booze)).  I've never been so sleep deprived or exhausted…but my heart has also never been so full.

Thanks for the ride, 2013. I'm comin' for ya, 2014.

Merry Christmas from the Davises

We hope all of your days are merry, bright and full of joy. We also hope that you get to enjoy lots of gingerbread cookies, a warm beverage and tons of laughter. Happy Birthday, Jesus.

outfit schmoutfit: vest with the fur ((with the furrrr))

I'll start out by saying that Chase is not a fan of this vest. I had it on for date night one evening and he we had a heated discussion on wearing things "so fashion-y." Woof. So, I wore flannel for date night. Romantic, right? I'll agree that this is a littttttle out there. But what good are the holidays for if you can't wear fur? Come on.

Anwho - I tried to dress the vest down with my boyfriend jeans and booties. I think it worked - but I could tell the people at the grocery store weren't so sure about it "working" given the looks I was receiving ((that's the grocery crowd in the worst dressed city in America for ya)). I've only worn these one other time ((here)) and wanted to get more wear out of them…so I did.

5 spring/summer trends you can wear today

Hi, Oh, Sweet Joy readers! I’m Katie the window-shopping and baking addicted blogger behind delightso.me. Kim has very kindly let me write a guest post for her. I’ve chosen to share my tips for next season’s trends that are warm enough to wear now, but which will take you well into next year…

While we’re still firmly stuck in the colder climes of winter, the fashion world, as always, is a step ahead. Designers have already sent their models sashaying down the runways of the four big fashion capitals in their spring/summer 2014 collections. And, while it’s definitely fun to be first, we definitely don’t want to freeze.

Smoking jacket
While the blazer has been a wardrobe staple for seasons – worn for both work and play, this versatile piece has been updated for next season. Taking inspiration from the traditional smoking jacket, Blumarine opted for fresh spring yellow and white while Pucci’s version was blue. I particularly like Rag & Bone’s claret velvet take on the trend and keeping my eyes open for a highstreet version. In the warm weather, you can wear over a 1990s-style slip. But, for now, the smoking jacket can be worn over holiday season party dresses.

Fringing is one of those circular trends that comes around again every few years. And, 2014 is one of those years. Fringed bikinis are expected to be a big trend by holiday poolsides this summer. And fringes of all sorts of material, including shredded leather and silk were seen on the runways.  For winter, you could incorporate fringing in a warm wrap, like this one from Bloomingdales.

Hues of blue
If the must-have hue for this season was pink, then the ‘it’ colour for spring and summer 2014 is blue, particularly sky blue. Mark Cain sent his models down the runway in lace cobalt blue trousers while Stella McCartney’s Paris show featured camisole dresses in block shades of blue, and blue and black lace. For an every-day take on the shade, La Redoute Creation’s pale blue long-line cardigan is in the hue of the moment. And, it can be layered up over a pair of skinny leather trousers for winter or worn over a pretty summer tea dress.

White queen
Purest white is always a great tan enhancer during the summer months, showing off your just-back-from-holiday sunkissed look. But, even if you aren’t exactly bronzed at the moment, white has taken over from black as the key colour for partywear. Country pop star Taylor Swift has worn a succession of white dresses for high-profile events, including at the Winter Whites Gala at Kensington Palace, where she took to the stage with Prince William to sing Livin’ on a Prayer with Jon Bon Jovi. This crepe dress by Balenciaga is not only white, but it’s in one of next season’s fashion-forward shapes, giving the illusion of being a top layered over a skirt. Wear with shoe boots now and tan sandals next year.

All that glitters
Metallics are set to be big news next season. Dior was just one of the designers to use shiny sumptuous fabrics. Raf Simons mixed preppy styling with florals and metallics for a sophisticated yet relaxed collection. The Belgian designer sent his models down the catwalks in double-breasted silver jackets and mid-length skirts. Vintage shops are a great place to look for metallics, as it’s a style that has transcended seasons, and decades. This Betsey Johnson number from Rokit features two key trends for next season – lace and metallic bronze – but could be worn now for the party season.

Nothing is fixed in fashion, but it always pays to think strategically when making this season’s key purchases – choosing wisely so they take you well into next season in fashion-forward style.

((thanks for sharing, Katie!))

sponsor highlight + giveaway ((featuring happy little lovelies))

How about one more handmade shop feature + giveaway for the year, okay? :D

Happy Little Lovelies began as a creative outlet and a wild-hare idea that *maybe* it could provide enough to keep me home with our kids.  Three and a half years ago, I resigned from my job as a music teacher, clicked "publish" and haven't looked back since.  And y'all?   I have been over-the-top blessed by the dear hearts who support me (and patiently listen as I go on and on about handmade biz stuff), a cute husband who lives with my messes and eats a lot of frozen pizza and the gracious people who keep ordering from me and telling all their friends.  Never in a million years did I expect to ever love a job so much.

A happy break for me is sipping coffee with a fun movie on and playing with color combinations and textures. Creating is a must for me to feel like myself, and I'm passionate about providing women with cute things to wear that are unique, lovely and don't cost a fortune.... after all, that's exactly what I want! - Dana

madewell event

A couple of weeks ago, I hosted a fun little holiday event at Madewell. It was fun for my worlds to collide, so to speak. Watching friends from my blog life and real life interacting together over a cutesy craft and snacks was so fun. Not to mention, I finally bought some coated denim that I've wanted forever. However, Chase makes fun of my "leather pants" every time I wear them.

I picked some favorite holiday looks and everyone had fun shopping with an extra little discount ;) I love the fun dresses that some gals purchased for upcoming holiday parties.

Thanks to everyone who came out to play dress up and craft with me! We're scheming a spring event - so stay posted for details!

a sentiment or two

This time, last year, I had a five-ish month baby bump and was still nauseous for a few hours every day. The house was decorated all cute and festively, and I remember just sitting by the fireplace and being amazed at the gift of life that was in my belly. We didn't know if it was a boy or a girl yet and we certainly couldn't fathom the amount of joy that this little boy would bring to our lives.

This time, next week, we'll be arriving in Texas with this 8 month old boy of ours, who was so anxiously awaited last Christmas. He has so many that love him as much as we do in Texas. It's such a gift and we are so blessed by that.

Yet, I get upset often that we are not in the same state as our family. It's frustrating that I can't just drop Knox off with his grandparents so we can go out for a date night  It's sometimes heartbreaking to watch him grow so fast and feel that I'm depriving my family of watching that first-hand, as well ((but thank goodness for FaceTime!)).

It seems unfair a lot of times - God and I have some heated discussions about it often ((or maybe it's just me throwing a fit and He pretty much just rubs my back and says, "It's okay.  Hang in there. It's for my Glory.")) - but I know that when we do get to spend time with family that I soak up every second. It makes us more intentional with our time and we cram as many good meals, laughs, and stories as we can into that short amount of time. It's never enough…but I know I'm blessed to get to spend my favorite holiday with ones that I love SO much. I'm blessed to get to share the joy of this boy's smile and giggles with family that love us so much….and then we get to "detox" the following week when he wants to be held constantly and is having withdrawals from all the attention not being on him ;)

(( jeans (similar) , necklace - anthropologie
peplum top - ℅ riffraff ))

This post has no point, other than to share I'm just feeling really blessed. I have a husband who loves me and a baby boy I'm pretty sure loves me too - as long as I'm not wiping his nose or feeding him green beans. I have a God who gently comforts me when I forget to "count the cost" or "consider it pure joy." He is good and I can't lose sight of that, especially in this holiday season.

((outfit schmoutfit)) when a scarf "makes" the outfit

There's nothing I love more on chilly days than a big ol' cozy scarf. I've been selling these via custom order and I'm just glad y'all love them as much as I do. ((You can email me to be added to my custom scarf/cowl/hood queue)) The flannel is so soft and warm and I use quite a bit of yardage to make it extra big and cozy.

The snow is melting and the sun is out, yet the cool temps lend themselves to lots of layers. I layered this peplum top from Madewell and my favorite button down from Anthropologie. The scarf kept it warm and a bit festive, while the boots were sheer function. It's slushy around here, y'all.

This outfit would be perfect with booties for a casual holiday get-together with friends and family, wouldn't it? Comfy and stylish - my two favorite outfit adjectives.
Lip  // Scarf -handmade by me // Peplum Top - Madewell (on sale in stores) similar here and also here // Overshirt // Denim: ℅ Anthropologie // Hunter Boots ((mine are from nordstrom rack))

And word to the wise? If you're going to take outfit photos - maybe get in the shade or don't take them smack-dab in the middle of the day so you don't have squinty eyes and fierce shadows in each photo. I'd say that these photos make me look super pale, but I really am that pasty. Good thing you don't come here for perfectly taken and/or edited photos.

gift giving with fligoo

Sometimes, no matter how well you know someone, coming up with a fun gift for them is a challenge. Enter Fligoo. I logged into fligoo, typed in Chase's name ((you log in via Facebook and can select any of your friends with upcoming birthdays - or anyone for that matter)),  selected my budget and it came up with a ton of gift ideas.

Once I found something I thought he'd love, I clicked "go for it" and it took me to the vendor's website. I ordered from there and it was SO easy. ((a bullet bottle opener? done. i also bought one for my brother))

You can also create a wish list, so that your friends and family don't have to stalk your pinterest boards to find what you want for a gift.

Fligoo is free and you can sign up here! Happy shopping :)

1. The only Christmas decorations we have up are our Christmas-y chalkboards and a santa hat/beard on Moose the Deer. We will be in Texas the week of Christmas and Knox rolls around too much to risk setting up a tree. I also just haven't had time in the midst of headband craziness. However, I have been taking some time every day to sing some "Christmas songs" while picking on the guitar - something I haven't done in years it seems. It's been a sweet time of pause and worship -- not to mention, Knox loves it. Maybe some Christmas decor will go up soon.

2. This time of year, I always want to learn to crochet or knit. It just seems like the coziest of activities, but I'm more of an instant gratification kinda gal.

3. I was sick earlier this week and didn't drink coffee for two days. It tastes so much sweeter ((but maybe that's just my peppermint latte creamer)) and sipping it slowly before my day gets crazy is one of my favorite parts of the day.

4. No outfit posts have popped up here recently because I haven't been putting myself as a priority - which means two showers max, per week. Gross. ((plus it's so cold!))

5. Chase dropped off all the outstanding headband orders at the post office for me this morning. I can't believe how big of a relief that is. Apparently, I don't know how to really take a break because I took on 15 scarf orders. ;)

pantone colors for spring 2014

Just popping in to say that I'm really pumped about this color palette for Spring. I've needed some color inspiration for fabric designs and this nailed it for me…but for now I'll enjoy the darker colors, winter hues, and flannels for the next couple of months. ;)

caprese salad - two ways

One of my favorite things in the whole world to eat is caprese salad. It's fresh, light (when you don't the whole platter), and is just incredibly delicious. If you order caprese at a restaurant, you will likely get large slices of tomatoes and a significant chunk of mozzarella, topped with basil and some balsamic.

Here are two fuss-free ways that I love serving ((and consuming)) caprese.

Mini Caprese-on-a-Stick Appetizers
You can either buy a tub of tiny mozzarella balls, some cherry tomatoes, and chiffonade some basil or you can go to the olive and appetizer station at Whole Foods and get it by the pound. ((Hint: get the same amount of tomatoes and mozzarella balls!)) Put a toothpick through one of each and throw 'em on a plate. I like to serve this with a side of balsamic dressing or drizzle some balsamic vinegar on top right before guests arrive.

Caprese Grilled Cheese:
I have a special place in my heart for Grilled Cheese sandwiches. Yes, Grilled Cheese deserves capital letters. I may even do a series of my favorite fancy Grilled Cheese sandwich recipes ((jalepeno popper anyone?)) soon. They are the perfect comfort food and this recipe combines this American staple with my beloved caprese salad.

Here's what You'll Need:
-Sliced mozzarella ((I got this from the meat & cheese counter at Whole Foods and she sliced it for me as thick or thin as I needed it for easy melting))
-Sliced tomatoes
-Pre-made Pesto from the prepared foods aisle at Whole Foods ((because I do not want to bust out my food processor to make my own))
-Bread and Butter

1. Butter your non-stick skillet and spread pesto on one side of the bread while it is melting.
2. Add tomatoes and then place mozzarella on top, placing other piece of bread on top.
3. Add to skillet on low-medium heat so that the bread browns evenly and the cheese melts slowly.
4. Enjoy and you can even serve one of the above mini caprese-on-a-stick appetizers on top if you're in a cutesy mood. Chase loved it. ((you can also serve this with a side of balsamic dressing))

So, there you have it. Two more ways to enjoy one of the most delicious appetizers out there.  Each would be perfect for a holiday party ((cut the grilled cheese into quarters)) and they're each so quick to make!

This post is sponsored by Whole Foods because I am a part of their Whole Foods Ambassador Blogger Program. I was not compensated for this post, but did receive most of the  items free of charge. Consider yourself disclosed ;)
