fessing up

Here is a list of things that, as a blogger, I'm supposed to like apparently...but I don't.

;)

/\/\/\/\ Chevron /\/\/\/\/
It's okay in small doses, but it's getting to be a little much these days. I suppose I've never understood the hype, but I feel like chevron is supposed to have had it's day by now. Can we move onto another pattern, please? Besides, I prefer to leave the zig zags to Charlie Brown & Afroman.

- Poorly Executed Mixing of Prints -
Mixing Prints like your first grade "I dressed myself!" self is not attractive. I rarely, but sometimes, break my rule of more than 2 prints, but after seeing the above photo, I will never do so again. I'm working on a post of how to mix prints well in your wardrobe. This is NOT how to do so.

- Giant Giveaways -
I'm guilty of taking part & I'm guilty of entering. However...I'm kiiiind of over them. It takes SO much time to enter and the followers gained rarely stick around. It just seems like it's ALL about gaining followers...we admit that's not what blogging is about, so why are we perpetuating the cycle?

- Saltwater Sandals -
Sooooo on this one I could be convinced otherwise. I mean, I love shoes so I guess I just need to see them on my feet. Even while searching for photos, I saw some CUTE outfits. *MOST* of them were on little kids but a few gals pulled them off really well, I have to admit. I guess I just see OLD LADYYYYYY and I'm having a hard time separating them from sort of awkward, colorful sandals. Again, I could see myself giving into this one so by the end of summer if you see me in them, be nice :)

Swaps -
You know the ones. It's like a modern day penpal. You sign up, get assigned a partner, send something to a stranger using your hard earned money, cross your fingers that your partner doesn't flake out. Now, I'm sure these can be fun...but unfortunately for me, I'm 0 for 4 in actually receiving something from these swaps, so I give up. No thanks. Call me a scrooge, but I will go buy myself a new coffee mug, Christmas gift, headband, hoop art, etc  from now on if I need or want one.

Outfit Photoshoots -
I sincerely LOVE putting together outfits, but I have yet to have fun with the photoshoots that must take place in order for me to share those outfits with you. I see people taking themselves wayyyyyy too seriously in mediocre outfits, posing & making facial expressions like they're on America's Next Top Model and I get embarrassed for them. I wonder if I look that silly too. There. I said it. I'm obviously not a fashion blogger. Hopefully I can still inspire you with what I wore? Maybe? I'm sweating.
((PS the photo above was taken the day I found out I was pregnant! Full post can be found here))

- Multiple posts a day blogs -
I can barely keep up with posting once a day, so it just makes me feel inadequate and not inspired, ha! Plus, I'm clearly not bringing in 10K a month from ads, so who can afford to do that unless you're bring in cash moneyyyy like that? That's not the standard, gals.

-  "Be the change you wish to see in the world" quote -
"false. change is a transitive verb with no corporeal body, human or otherwise."
Can we go ahead and add in "not all who wander are lost?"

- Striped Straws & Mason Jars -
Syke. I love them both and I don't care who knows it.

**This post was obviously meant to be lighthearted. soooo if you like, own, or have done any of the forementioned items, no judgement here! I mean, i still wear bubble necklaces even though everyone and their moms have one...so what do I know? ;) **

love.

  1. I love this post especially about the outfit photoshoots! Oh my word these fashion bloggers are going to the extreme taking multiple pictures in the outfit (take 104 with a tilted head down gazing into the concrete - how artistic).

I love my chevron, but I love this post because it does seem like a blogger have a protocol or a stigma that we all do the same things. Great post!

  2. that last picture threw me for a loop! ha! i was gonna have to disagree on that one! ;) I'm with you on some of these though...even though guilty of doing one or more a time or two. but..i do fully agree! I've never gotten the chevron either...other than crochet pattern...but that was cool way before 'chevron' was. ;)

  3. I loved this post Kim! Thanks for your honesty! Outfit posts: I've never done them because I feel that I am not doing anything out of the ordinary when I dress. I mean, jeans + shirt + pretty shoes...pretty ordinary! Maybe the occasional more put together outfit, but I am no fashion blogger. {besides, I'm waaaay shy for that} :]

  4. I just told a friend this week that "I'm over chevron." And really - I was never "under" it, like you. It's all right. It's not life-changing.

  5. Well, I don't own any saltwaters, but I think they are super cute. But I'm with you on the others, especially the mixing prints. Ugh. I have to add, too, my personal beef right now is with hi-lo hems on skirts. I know they are totally "on-trend" but they look like a mistake I made sewing, or like they accidentally tucked part of the skirt into their undies. I'm always like, "okay, I try not to do that." But that's just me. ;-)

    1. hahahahaa that's awesome. now every time i wear one i will feel like at least ONE person thinks I tucked the top part of my skirt into my undies on accident ;)

  6. the mason jar thing is starting to get on my nerves. I think, depending on the setting, they can be kind of charming, but it seems to me like mason jars are being WAY overused (cough, A Beautiful Mess). like people are trying to hard to be trendy. also, have you seen the ones that are like wine glasses?? gah.

    ReplyDelete

    1. the wine glasses are a bit overkill and dare i say, trashy....but ((at the moment)) the overuse doesn't get on my nerves. i love them :) we're probably all guilty of overusing them :D

our grandparents probably think we're dumb for using canning jars as drinking glasses though!

  7. Hahha I love this. The outfit photo shoots was something I WAS just writing about in my blog post. I went to school for fashion, work as a photographer, but I just don't have time or desire to take more pictures than just a quick one in mirror if I'm digging the outfit. Call me lazy...

And the Chevron thing... like you said, I like it in small doses but I feel like it's almost overstayed it's welcome. But everyone else seems to love it... I'm okay being one of the few who doesn't.

  8. Ha, LOVE this. Couldn't agree more with it. Especially the outfit photoshoots. Who in the world is taking the pictures for these people? I always wonder that. ;P

Another thing that I'm over - is blogs NOT announcing who there giveaway winner is. It's like they are fishing and fishing for people to come back. I like doing the giveaways, because HEY, I love to win, but have caught on to some blogs that don't announce, and it really turns me off, and makes me never want to participate in your giveaways or blog.

One person I know - said they only tweet who the winner is - WHY? I don't have time to watch for every twitter that you send through. I think if they use the Rafflecopter, then post the person there. Isn't that what it's for? haha Sorry, just my annoynce coming out. ;P

    Anyways, love the post.

  9. YES on all of these! Blogs that post multiple times a day are exhausting. And it kind of cheapens the experience because either the content sucks or they have a bunch of contributors and it just makes me bitter either way. Haha! And giveaways that make you add/pin a crap ton of stuff. Annoying. Dirty little secret: I add "those" blogs to my google reader that I haven't signed into in 3 years haha So, I guess their number went up by one but I'm not really following. Is that bad? lol I actually did my first and last "pinning" giveaway the other day and then went in and deleted them all yesterday because it made me feel gross.

  10. BAHAHAHA. Okay, I fully hands down agree with the chevron. It's cute, but it's SO OVERUSED BY BLOGGERS. GAHHHH. Also, I like Saltwaters, but I think it's subconsciously because my hubby's mom forced him to wear them when he was little? I dk. They're cute. Anyway, love this. xo

  11. Ditto on the chevron! Unfortunately my mom who lives in a teeny tiny town is just now jumping on the band wagon. I finally told her last weekend....mom, that was big summer of 2010. You should read some blogs. I like the pattern, but I'm ready for the new pattern. Florals?? Horizontal stripes are everywhere...but they just make me look wide I've decided. Not sure why my last 2 purchases have had horizontal stripes. UGH!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I have Salt Waters, and I freakin' love them!!!! You are going to look so cute on you. I can't wait to see them!!!! Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yeah I never got the chevron craze either...It's a pattern. AND I have HUGE feet so the saltwaters aren't happening for me either...can you imagine? I think I'd look like a clown. ;) I never win giveaways so I don't bother entering them. I can't remember how I found your blog but I LOVE it :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. thank you for your lighthearted honesty. i agree with you - but just never had the gull to speak it out loud -- err or write it in public. :) you'll never see me in mix-match patterns - altho some chicks pull it off!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I totally agree! I've been seriously blogging for 6 months now and have been wondering if I was the only one feeling this way! Thanks for being so candid. I love it! I always wanted to blog to share what I was doing with other people and to make it seem easy (especially with cooking) but I was feeling so pressured by the whole blog world. Thanks again for sharing!

  16. LOVE IT! I totally don't claim to be a "blogger" although I have been blogging casually since January. I love blog humor though! :) Great post!

  17. OH my gosh, yes. NO MORE CHEVRON! And the outfit posts. I mean, I just cannot pull them off, no matter what. So I gave them up a long time ago.

    Love your blog! :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree with you completely on the outfit posts... there's a blogger (who will remain nameless) and she posts outfit pictures of herself on her blog and instagram and it's literally jeans, a cotton top, wedge heels and a scarf every single time. Sometimes a belt if she's feeling really wild and frisky. Equally irritating are the commenters "oooh where did you get that!?" As if its not from the five places women our age (and most bloggers shop. (Target, Old Navy, Loft, JCrew, Etc.)

But don't touch my mason jars or cute straws. ;)

  19. haha I love your honesty! I definitely think people go a little over board with all the trendy-bloggy things sometimes! Thanks for staying real! =)

  20. Once you go Saltwater, you don't go back!!

But ditto to all the rest. Chevron, see you later please.

  21. Ha! Mine are TOMS, huge glasses, bubble necklaces (I still love you sister!), dumb poses for outfit posts. People don't really stand like THAT now, do they?

I have to admit, I really like the photoshoot part of the outfit posts. I have fun finding cute locations with Chris and he's pretty funny "directing" me.

Any "trend" is actually cool in my book if people put their own spin on it. It's when people buy and wear something just because others do that makes me give 'em the sideeye. Ah, well, to each his own!

    1. Toms...THANK YOU! I don't get it either! I tried a pair on once and they didn't even feel comfortable on my feet. As you say, to each his own... :)

    2. amen. I know Toms are a good cause but so are a bajillion other things. ALSO I say no to huge glasses, bubble necklaces and Chevron.

And @Lindsay-- your photos shoots are cute.

  22. I can't handle those sandals! I've never seen them though.

SO over chevron! What's worse, it seems to have just caught on in my small-town southern area. so I see it everywhere now.

I hate the freaking striped straws. The paper feels so gross in my mouth!

    Long live mason jars.

    ReplyDelete
  23. haha! I love ya Kim!!
    This post is awesome!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wearing my bubble necklace right now. Haha. And I literally am using mason jars and striped straws tonight for a wedding shower. BUT--agree with you on so many of these things. I do however like chevron. Not a fan of the trendy fashion (layered like above)--I like what I like. Haha. Great post.

    ReplyDelete
  25. this is my first time stopping by---and I was nodding in agreement at all of them, and then my jaw was on the floor about stripey straws and mason jars and I was thinking "oh man, no.way. But they are SO CUTE." and then I was happy again when you said syke. ;) haha. awesome. cute little blog you have here, lady.

    ReplyDelete
  26. What the hell is a bubble necklace? Uhh...yeah...clearly I am not on trend...with anything. :(

  27. Love this. hehe I do like chevron and mason jars.... ;) And agree with you in most other areas!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ha! This totally made me laugh...I do appreciate what you said about the giant giveaways and swaps...I've had terrible luck with swaps! The idea is fun, to meet someone new, but I always am disappointed with what comes my way. Gotta say, though, I do like a little chevron. In tiny doses.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Love it!

I was thinking about a few of the same things this morning during my commute... How Chevron stripes are everywhere.

Then it occurred to me- they're on my blog! LOL So there's that...

    Mixing prints? Eh, I'll pass.

And those giant giveaways!! I usually don't participate because I don't have time to follow 20+ blogs on multiple social media sites. It's exhausting!

Love your humor and honesty =)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I appreciate your candor. I also have a very serious question. Is it possible to purchase striped straws made of anything other than paper? I used one at a party recently and after one drink it was soggy and gross and I ended up throwing it away and getting a plain old plastic straw.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love this! I actually love what people are calling "chevrons" these days - my pet peeve is that chevron is not the correct word to describe that pattern. A chevron is a V shape (or a row of V shapes), not zig zags. Apparently "zig zag" just doesn't sound hip enough to obsess over.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Can I just say that I love putting together outfits too? You know what I wish I had? Someone who I could just dress and take photos of her. Anyone up for that? Cuz I feel so darn awkward taking photos of me.

Also, I really try not to take myself too seriously with outfit photos. i am not a model. And I can't run my fingers through my hair or tilt my head while looking serious.

I just like presenting outfits in a way that might make people look at their closet in a new way... and I hope somehow that comes across. If not, shoot... I better get some big blogger glasses and a chevron high-low dress.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with ALMOST all of these, minus the outfit posts. If people want to show off what they wore, whatevs. I think it's nice that someone has confidence enough to do that and shooting down someone for it is just a way to take that confidence away.

Otherwise, I am nodding my head along with every word!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Um, I think you are my new best friend! Especially the chevron and all the "fashion" pics! Not for me at all!

    ReplyDelete
  35. kim, you're so offensive!!!

    jk, you're hysterical.
i'm sure i'm guilty of someone's blogging pet-peeve but whatevs! it's good to laugh at yourself sometimes, keeps my head from getting too big.

  36. Cracking up!
Between this and the facebook post the other day, I am thinking a post on how much you love us should be coming soon. ;)
And don't you know that those big giveaways are merely lotto for Christian women! I always get this feeling like I might win!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. so funny! but, i'm pretty sure you'd love saltwater sandals if you bought a pair! i get compliments on mine every time i wear them.

    1. Agreed! :) Haha! But not all colors are created equal. If you find the right color for you/your wardrobe I'm sure you'll love them. Bonus: when it rains and it's warm they are the perfect sandal BECAUSE they can get wet! Whoop!

  38. There's so many things I feel like I have to like because I'm a blogger and it's what's "in"! It's freeing to 'fess up! I'll confess I'm still in love with owls. I don't think I'll ever get over them. I'm with you on the chevron, it's way overused now. Let's move on to horizontal stripes, those never go out of style. Oh outfit posts, how I hate doing them myself, but I love looking at other people's :) Taking pictures of myself without looking awkward is hard! :)

  39. You know what's worse than "not all who wander are lost"? "all who wander are not lost". I've seen it in several places (including as prints for sale), and it drives me nuts. Some of those who wander are lost!

  41. YES to everything. Especially the bad print mixing and chevron.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yep yep yep! I'm mostly tired of feeling like I have to keep up with trends that aren't me just to get attention from the masses. Your newest follower by the way!

    ReplyDelete
  43. This is wonderful.

I've always been kind of "meh" about chevron. It ended up in my kid's nursery because I couldn't find any rugby or ticking stripe in the right color yellow. Thankfully, it looks good, but it was a big concession.

Also, if I see one.more.freaking.outfit.post where the blogger has a serious face on and she's got her hand in her hair and she's looking away from the camera... thank you for keeping your outfit posts real.

And finally, for the record, I lurrrrve the look of those cute stripey straws in mason jars but I will admit it right here in blogdom that I think paper straws are obnoxious. They get all soggy if you use them for too long. This slow sipper does not appreciate (but will sacrifice for the cuteness).

  44. It should be said that i love love love this post! THERE... now i said it. And ps - as a blogger who gets very few comments, i have to wonder abiut those who get loads, like 25-150+. Do they really have time to read and connect with all those sweet readers who take the time to comment? Just wondering. XO sweet texas gal! Love ya!

  45. Umm i happen yo have Saltwater Sandals, so i find this quite offensive. Teehee, just kidding of course. Actually a big fan of this post. I'm with you on the outfit posts. I appreciate how down-to-earth yours are. I would like to start doing some at some point because i really do love dressing myself.. maybe if we have a pretty backyard in portland i'll start :) Love ya pretty lady.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I completely agree with some of these! Chevron is only ok at best, mixing prints is always a no-no in my opinion, and I am so all over the mason jar/striped straw fad! I plan on using it for a baby shower I'm throwing this summer! :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Just had to chime in on the saltwater sandals, I have a pair in red and you really are missing out!! They are super cute, comfy, and I get tons of compliments on them. Granted, I don't wear them every day in the summer and I make sure the outfit is right for them. They are so worth every penny and they are far from old ladyish!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. i absolutely liked this post! i'm drawn to chevron more often than not but i like to keep it simple also. the only chevron item i own is a coupon booklet and i purchased a couple rolls of duct tape (in the target dollar spot) to add some fun to my boxes when i moved.

i sometimes don't understand the outfits i've seen put together. lol.

    thanks for the giggles! :)
