Let's talk Kate Spade. When I think Kate Spade I think: classy, staples, stripes. In her most recent collection, Saturday, Kate came out with these adorable flats. I loved them, but I wouldn't spend that much on a pair of shoes on a whim ((or ever, really)) and I also wasn't crazy about the change in direction of the stripes. I have somewhat large feet for a small statured gal ((size 9 and I'm 5'4 on a good day)), so the stripes on the toe wouldn't do me any favors, I'm sure. I decided to get creative & make some myself, so I went to Target to pick up some cheapo flats, busted out the fabric paint, tape, and a sponge brush and got my DIY on.
Here's a quick tutorial for you to make your own Kate Spade inspired striped ballet flats.
I paired mine with some polka dot ankle pants for a little pattern play, but these would be so great to dress up a plain white tee & dark denim. I mean, with a red lip and top knot? MAJ.
Sorry. I've been watching too much Rachel Zoe.
-Regular scotch tape seemed to rip off some of the black on the shoe, so I switched to washi tape. It still did it, but not as badly. Besides, I like that it made them distressed looking, since the painted stripes look that way too.
-I dabbed the first layer of paint and then brushed the second layer. This made for better coverage, in my opinion.
-Peel away the tape when the paint is still wet so you can touch up messy spots easier.
